The land of London

Note, this is the email i sent out, just too lazy to write a new one for LJ.

Hello all, just thought I'd start chronicling my adventures thus far. Landed in London at about 8am to be greeted by a dark, wet and grey sky, which cleared up about 20 minutes ago, although it has since clouded over. Spent the first day trying to stay awake until night time to defeat jet lag, a pursuit in which I was mildly successful. Since then I've started doing the whole tourist thing, Journeying into Canterbury and wandering around the Cathedral there, which really makes anything in Australia look rather pathetic in comparison. Journeyed down into the crypts below, where there was a cellist and pianist playing, which sounded absolutely fantastic. Everything here is quite quintessentially english. I know that this comment would appear rather superfluous, but everything you see is so different, they have all the taxis and buildings and small lane ways that you see in the movies, all shrouded by the typical overcast sky. Everything is quite green though.

The family I'm staying with is very nice, and live in a house straight out of notting hill or some other hugh grant film (I think he was in notting hill, I really can't remember). Yesterday I went into London for the first time, and visited the British National Museum, where an enjoyable morning was spent wandering around Egyptian, Greek and Roman historical exhibits. Saw the Rosetta stone, which was quite cool, and some great big statues.

Wandered back outside where it had begun raining, although my mood was lightened by Anna's ridiculous bright yellow raincoat, which was both ineffective and amusing. Found a small Pizzeria where I learned that you shouldn't trust the description of pizza's on the board, as 'pepperoni' obviously means cheese and tomato sauce. It was warm though, which was nice.

Aimless wandering was the order of the hour for the next stint, and we decided to head to Hadley's, the most giant toy store in the world. Never ended up making it, but discovered the Museum of Natural History instead, which was fantastic, as there was a dinosaur exhibit on, complete with 75% of a tyrannosaurus rex (no tail or left leg), but they had lots of others. There were also some other things there about plants, mammals and people, including large novelty mirrors, which resulted in far too much amusement for my age.

Rest of the day was spent travelling back to Kent, which took an inordinate amount of time due to services being closed or delayed. We were lucky enough to get a carriage with 7 small children however, so all was not lost. The final leg involved anna being accosted by an old man about her chocolate eating.

Anyway, that's the end of the first installment, congratulations if you've made it this far. I'll update later.

Ciao

I just finished reading a book, and for your benefit, I shall not name what book it is incase you choose to read it, but the author (bastard that he is) decided to kill one of the main characters in the final pages of the novel. It was all very poignant and touching, but the end result is that his death has made me sad. After being basically an arrogant jerk for the second and third books in the series, he was finally becoming a likeable character again, and he was in love with another character and now he's dead. And I am unhappy. I must go and read a book with a happy ending, as before this I read The Amber Spyglass which has a similarly poignant yet depressing ending.

I've never seen a movie with such gratituous use of motorbikes, outrageously large swords and fight scenes. Suffice to say that the hairstyles, being a Japanese anime were incredibly awesome and all the men looked like women. The animation was jaw dropping. So yeah, this is merely a shameless plug for the movie, but I don't care.

Had a fantastic night last night at Kairsten's how to host a murder party. I was Miles, the dashing english race car driver who hid the shocking secret that he was really french. It's no small wonder he wanted to keep that fact quiet. I was also the 'murder', but that is of little consequence apparently as the victim, rather than suffering death at the hands of my cunning plan, was suffered death by a thousand corks, when the wine in his cellar simultaneously showered him with corks, driving the priceless dagger into his chest. Hughboy played the debonair jewel dealer who was also a dirty dirty thief. He also hopped on the good foot and did the bad thing with Lexie. A fact she spent all evening swooning about. Lexie was also a prostitute for those of you who care. Janya played a Russian countess who, although very well accented, had little effect on the outcome of events. Other than running the brothel within which Lexie offered her services. I think that just about wraps up the escapades of those LJ inclined who attended the party. murderess

Last night was a singularly good night, I had an awesome roast dinner, discovered that the assignment which I had not completed was due, not today, but on thursday, and downloaded the new chilly peppers song, which, I hope, signals that their next album will swap out of the long-overdue category and into the recent-release category. I have also commenced downloading two studio ghibli films, howls moving castle and princess mononoke which are both quite awesome, although the former is more awesome than the last. I ran into someone today who i hadn't seen in about 3 months and spent the next few minutes tormenting them as they didn't remember me. I'm not sure if this is something to be celebrated or not, but there you go.

I have also commenced writing a story, my first non-school-english story in about 8 years, and, although it is of singularly poor quality, I am enjoying writing it. Welcome to a world of plot holes and spelling errors main characters! Hopefully we will get a large storm tonight, which, apart from soaking me, will look quite cool.
